Checking health insurance and getting proof
The day we opened the government source and matched the numbers. This is not a labor attorney's review.
Who enrolls me
When a foreigner becomes a workplace subscriber, the employer must report it to the National Health Insurance Service within 14 days from that day.
How to check whether you are enrolled
Get a health insurance qualification certificate (건강보험 자격득실확인서). You can issue it yourself at Government24 (정부24) or the National Health Insurance Service. You do not have to ask the company.
Why this document matters
If you are not enrolled
If there is no record on the certificate, first check whether the reporting deadline has passed or the record simply has not appeared yet. No record does not right away mean you were not enrolled, so ask the National Health Insurance Service on 1577-1000 about your enrollment date and the report status. If it turns out they did not report you, ask 1350 whether it counts as a reason to change workplace.
Daily workers are different
A daily worker employed for less than 1 month is not covered as a workplace subscriber. For daily workers, standards such as an employment period of 1 month or more and working 8 days or more a month are looked at together. If you worked at several sites under the same employer, you need to check whether the periods can be added together. Ask 1577-1000 whether you are enrolled and your enrollment date.
